Meruschka Govender: MzansiGirl, African travel activist, experience seeker and tourism thinker
Bit by the travel bug as a kid, Merushcka @MzansiGirl discovered South Africa through countless road trips with her family. As a grown-up, her love of travel drove her out of a career in banking into the tourism sector, where she worked as a project manager for Fair Trade Tourism before taking on the role of Deputy Director: Tourism at the dti and subsequently Director in the International Relations Branch in the Department of Tourism.
Shaping national policy was interesting and took her to other countries, but she wasn’t exploring as much as she wanted to, and certainly not the things she felt needed to be experiences. So armed with a Twitter handle. Meruschka entered the world of micro-blogging, which has since become blogging, freelance writing and social media consulting. She’s passionate about telling the good stories about South Africa and the rest of Africa on her blog www.mzansigirl.com, and is one of SA’s foremost travel influencers. Meruschka has been featured in various print and travel websites, and has worked on digital campaigns with various travel and lifestyle brands including South African Tourism, Mauritius Tourism, Kenya Tourism Board and Gauteng Tourism. Meruschka is also a chapter leader at the Johannesburg chapter of Travel Massive.
