This competition is now closed. Marine Dynamics was announced as the winner of the People’s Choice Award for the 2016 African Responsible Tourism Awards. The winner of the digital subscription will be announced soon.

The African Responsible Tourism Awards at WTM Africa announces today the launch of its only publically-voted category – the People’s Choice in Responsible Tourism in association with Ticket2Utopia.

Three winners of the 2015 African Responsible Tourism Awards at WTM Africa go forward into this year’s People’s Choice category.

The finalists include a luxury game lodge in Botswana with noticeable innovation in reducing the environmental footprint of the lodge, a group of tourism businesses that have created an exemplary destination which has conserved fynbos and marine wildlife, and a marine adventure tourism operator ploughing significant resources into the conservation of whales, sharks and penguins.

Heidi van der Watt, Managing Director of organisers Better Tourism Africa, comments, “One of the main aims of the African Responsible Tourism Awards at WTM Africa is to inspire tourists and the tourism industry by what is possible to achieve through responsible tourism.”

The organisations in the running for the People’s Choice Award are previous winners, already proven to be the leaders and innovators driving positive changes in the tourism industry, but we now want to know which of these provides the real inspiration to the travelling public.”

This year the People’s Choice Award is launched in partnership with Ticket2Utopia. Ticket2Utopia’s visual storytelling combines powerful, altered-perspective landscape photography with success stories from tourism visionaries who have changed their perspective about how they view their relationship with the people and natural environments where they operate.  Ticket2Utopia provides a platform for their stories to be heard and shared, inspiring others to change their perspectives too and realize the myriad opportunities for people and nature to thrive, creating better destinations overall.

Lisa Scriven of Ticket2Utopia said “We feel privileged to partner with Better Tourism Africa for the first ever People’s Choice Award for Responsible Tourism at WTM Africa.  What the finalists in the category have accomplished already in their businesses and destinations is truly inspirational. And perhaps more importantly, they’ve proven that it’s achievable. They changed their perspectives about how they do business a long time ago and they, along with their staff, communities, and surrounding environments, are reaping the benefits.”

Everyone who casts a vote in the People’s Choice Award will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win subscriptions to National Geographic and National Geographic Traveller digital editions.

The three organisations being put forward to the public vote are:

  • Chobe Game Lodge, Botswana
  • Gansbaai, South Africa
  • Marine Dynamics, South Africa

Voting closes on 4 April 2016 and the winner will be announced at the African Responsible Tourism Awards ceremony on 7 April 2016, at World Travel Market Africa in Cape Town. The winner of the magazine draw will also be announced in April 2016.
