Soweto Hotel’s scorecard after the first site vist

Here is a summary of the responsible practices that Soweto Hotel were involved in when we did the first site visit.


Water saving devices
  • Taps are fitted with aerators or other water-saving devices
  • Showers are fitted with low-flow showerheads or other water-saving devices
  • Toilets are fitted with water-saving devices
Water saving practices
  • Water leaks and drips are reported immediately for repair

Energy saving devices
  • Lighting is energy efficient CFLs or LEDs
  • Rooms have extra blankets for use in cooler months
  • Heat pumps have been installed

  • Checklists require that all lights, TV, AC and minibars be turned off in check-out rooms

Reducing waste
  • Food waste is minimised, eg by making meals to order instead of a buffet
  • Some waste that can be re-used by the business or others has been identified
  • Different types of waste are separated
  • Some non-compostable material is sent for recycling
Disposal of hazardous waste
  • The business knows which waste is harmful and needs special disposal methods
  • Harmful waste safely is disposed of safely

  • Some harmful substances are substituted with environmentally-friendly alternatives
  • The use of harmful substances is limited



Supporting biodiversity conservation


  • Guests are provided with written material about areas of interest in terms of biodiversity that are nearby

  • Guest feedback is collected, monitored and acted upon
  • Promotional materials are accurate, complete and do not make misleading claims about sustainability or what can be delivered

  • Staff are made aware of business’ responsible tourism practices
